A clean water well transforms a village—freeing children, women and entire families from the long, hazardous trek to fetch water from murky surface sources. Globally, 2.1 billion people still lack access to safely managed drinking water services. In sub-Saharan Africa, the burden falls overwhelmingly on women and girls: in nearly 70% of households without piped water, they bear primary responsibility for collection. On average, women and girls walk about 3.7 miles (6 km) per day carrying up to 44 pounds of water.

In rural Ghana and beyond, the absence of accessible, well-equipped clinics remains a life-threatening reality. A 2023 study found that 50.5% of communities are outside the safe reach of any health facility. Another report highlighted persistent shortages of medical supplies and skilled staff in rural settings, making it difficult for locals to receive critical care.
